Artist's Comments

"They" refers to art education. It's not always the case, but it often seems like art classes and teachers are trying to steer people into the same direction which can essentially suck part of the creativity out of a person's work. Inspired by an exchange of comments with ~hidden8707 .

Ok I just typed a bunch of stuff that didn't make sense, trying to explain how I agree with you, then erased it all. Let's just say that I really can relate to this. I don't take art classes for this very reason.

..I do believe that this is the most color I've ever seen you use!! ..nice piece!!

Thanks. Yeah it is a little colorful for me, but that is only because of the paintings in the background. I had to use color in those because they are supposed to be "REAL" paintings...and "REAL" art has color in it. :)

....this is one of your instructors that's telling you this?? ...what a dope!! ..tell him or her to go look at some Aubery Beardsley or some Gustav Dore wood-cuts!!! ..tell me that's not art??

Na, they didn't say that...but in general drawing is considered unfinished work -- usually just preparation for something like a painting. I'm content with just drawing with charcoal, pen, pencil, and colored pencils but I just don't see any of it being acceptable for a museum or an art gallery. It's a shame (to me anyway) that drawing is thought of like this because it just seems like a much more emotionally pure and direct way to create art than spending 60+ hours on an oil painting. Of course, I'm all for that kind of thing too...it just don't fit my personal approach to creating art. I think I got a little off the actual topic of the reply, or even the subject of this drawing...oh well.

I'll have to look up these wood-cuts you mentioned...I'm curious now.

..I know exactly what you're saying...sometimes with just a few pencil strokes you can say so much more than any painting!! ...and, yeah Dore has some awesome stuff!! ..He did a bunch of illustrations for Milton's Paradise Lost. ..lots of cool angels and demons!!!!

I love the detail on the head-drink.

Thanks. I think I succeeded in actually making it look like the head is being sucked dry (of creative energy)...at least I'm hoping so.
